THE ESSENTIALS

Visit the Green Island

Ile Verte, a departmental domain since 1963, is the only wooded island in the Bouches-du-Rhône. A crossbow’s reach from the mainland, it is very close… and yet already so far away! Taking the boat, even if only for ten minutes, means setting off on an adventure to discover the remains of an ancient sunken continent, the remains of fortifications, the remains of “Gabianesque” orgies… but above all, not the remains of your passage (bring a bag to take back your rubbish, as there are no bins on the green island).

From the “Vieux Port” of La Ciotat, the shuttle bus takes ten minutes to cross the inlet and arrive at the calanque Saint-Pierre.

Calanque of Figuerolles

Figuerolles is a small cove with wonderful colours. As in Mugel, you can find these very special rocks that plunge into the turquoise water.

This setting has already attracted many film-makers and famous painters (Braque). On sunny days, you can still come across a few amateurs immortalizing this landscape. Halfway down, you will discover a small restaurant whose terrace offers a breathtaking view of the cove. There is also a small hotel and some bungalows. And if you want to move around a bit, find out about the adventure courses at Figuerolles, it is the perfect playground for introductory outings of 2 to 3 hours. Whether it’s for a swim, a dinner or a weekend, a change of scenery is guaranteed. To discover, 5 minutes away (by car), the small path on the hill which offers a plunging view on the calanque and goes up to the chapel of Notre Dame de la Garde.

Mugel Park and Calanques

The Calanque du Mugel is a natural site in the shelter of the Bec de l’Aigle massif.
This cove is a real geological fortress built on the torrents of the secondary. The pebbles have formed a reddish conglomerate, the “poudingue” of La Ciotat.

The Calanque is home to a botanical park, “Le Parc du Mugel”, which invites you to go for a walk and discover many plants from our region, some of which are very rare.

The Beaches

Located on the Mediterranean Sea, about 30 kilometres from Marseille, La Ciotat has been elected most beautiful bay in the world in 2019. This international label aims to highlight exceptional sites that respect the environment. A title that makes all Ciotadens very proud!
Although many tourists tend to focus on neighbouring Cassis, La Ciotat is full of beautiful places.
